Darna means "our house." For the population of street children and women in need that the organization serves, those words have a special resonance. In the houses of Darna, children and women at risk find a safe and stable temporary home, learn their rights as citizens, and reintegrate into the mainstream of Morocccan society -- through stable learning and living environments, skills training programs, and career-building initiatives.  [more...]

Our ongoing sister project is the Cinematheque de Tanger. In 2005, the CDT will open in its permanent home, the Cinema Rif, on the historic Grand Socco plaza. Today, as one of a handful of active cinemas in Tangier, the Rif shows mostly B-rated Bollywood films. The CDT's ambition is to transform this beautiful old theater into Morocco's leading movie house for independent cinema and repertory programming.  [more...]

Tangier Treehouse Project PHOTOS HERE!

The Treehouse Project, which took place in Tangier the second 2 weeks of April, was a resounding success. The 10 boys from Darna's Woodworking Program were enthusiatic and focussed throughout the two week intensive workshop, at the end of which they had observed and worked on the Showroom Treehouse which will be used to show future clients, and built a smaller house on their own. Roderick Romero led the workshops backed by master carpenters Bubba Smith, Daryl McDonald, by 212 Society founder Sean Gullette, and surprise special guest Pete Nelson (the founder of Treehouse Workshop, who dropped in from Barcelona) led the workshops.

Mornings at the workshop began with warmup yoga on the roof with Roderick, and then a trip to the classroom for a high energy review of the 14 steps of the treehouse project, starting with 1. Phone call from Client. Make appointment to view trees. 2. Arrive at appointment on time. Tour trees. 3. Select tree. Climb tree and spend time getting to know the tree. 4. Take First Measurements of tree. and so on...

Veteran documentry filmmakers David Shadrack Smith and Charlotte Mangin shot extensive footage for a documentary film which recorded the workshop and explored the lives of three of the boys in more depth. (We are seeking finishing funds for the film...)

Next, the Darna Treehouse Team will present to their first proper client, a prominent Tangier citizen with a couple of great oak trees...
